a bullet strikes and kills an innocent bystander. and a car crashes and critically injures a woman walking down the block. plus this. did that wake you up this morning? three buildings imploded to make way for an affordable housing complex. and good evening, i'm rob schmitt. tonight, we have new information about an innocent victim here who was in the wrong place at the wrong time shot down by a police bullet. and we understand the 61-year-old victim was a religious man. news 4's michael george has more from mt. vernon. >> reporter: well, rob, felix kumi likely had no idea that he was walking down the street and right into an undercover police sting. and when the bullets flew, felix was hit. for the first time we're hearing the police commissioner's response.

a horrible mistake, an innocent bystander shot dead by the nypd officer. we spoke to friends of felix kumi. >> he was our brother, we all loved him. >> reporter: kumi was a meanwhile man and a caring father. there are still questions about how he died. but their faith is bringing them hope. >> the scriptures do tell us harm befalls all of us. but it just happened that it happened that way. >> reporter: the nypd said it all started with an undercover gun deal in the bronx, but the cop brought it to this neighborhood, but then the suspect pulled a gun and tried to rob the officer. the cop said he fired when the suspect pulled a gun on him, hitting him three times. but he also hit felix kumi in the torso, he had just happened to be walking there during the incident. the gun had been fake.

one spokesperson said mr. kumi was blameless, and this has tried and tested his family. his family declined to comment but his friends in the religious community say he will be missed terribly. >> a good father, love, kind, helping, faithful man all the way. and always a good example for us all. >> reporter: and the officer was not injured. now one suspect is in the hospital and he will face the other suspect is jeffrey ariste of the bronx, age 28, facing charges including sale of a controlled substance and firearms. news 4 new york, michael george. and breaking news from texas. we have just learned the identity of the man accused of the execution-style death. deputy darren goforth was pumping gas into his car last

night when he was shot several times in the back of the head. there is surveillance video of the shooting and investigators say the man in that video is miles. >> well, we have not been able to extract any details regarding a motive at this point. as far as we know, deputy goforth had no previous contact with the suspect. and it appears at the outset to be clearly unprovoked. >> well, deputies say miles mother called 911 to report her son wh as the gunman. deputy goforth leaves behind a wife and two kids. a wild scene in the bronx. a car slams, barrels onto a sidewalk, slams into a store and pins a woman underneath it. she is in critical condition tonight. tonight, the driver could be facing criminal charges. this happened in the mt. hope section. more from sheldon dutes. >> reporter: here, the worker

stands outside the grocery store while pedestrians bustle by. the scene was interrupted when the driver went out of control at 8:30 a.m. >> i heard something come down from the wall or something. and then the guy was there. >> reporter: police say the 68 driver of the black suv was traveling on east tremont avenue when he lost control at the grocery store. his car ran into the stand and store critically injuring a 41-year-old woman standing on the sidewalk. >> i hit the woman, when i went back, she couldn't move. >> reporter: he works nearby and said the people rushed over to help the injured woman. >> other people had came. the paramedic came. the police, what we did was all get together and lift the lady up. she had hundreds of fruit autumn

-- and the items pinned under her chest. >> after crews towed the car away, workers spent the day repairing the store. while business returned to normal inside. in the mt. hope section of the bronx, sheldon dutes. and the actor who debuted on broadway has died. carl john baptiste fell from his mother's home, he was just 29 years old. he was the first african-american and youngest person to play in this role in les miserable. and obviously that remains on 14th -- all that remains on 14th street where a man was found burning, police put out

the flames and noticed injuries on the man's body. police are trying to learn who he was and if he was dead before he was set on fire. well, a sigh of relief tonight in south florida. tropical storm erika has gone away entirely from that area. but those living in tampa are still watching the storm pretty close. many forecast models shows erika breaking up as it moves. and this area in south florida is already quite waterlogged. meanwhile, at least 20 people are dead in the eastern caribbean island of dominica. erika last a past of destruction with five others killed in haiti. the storm caused more than $16 million in damage to crops. steve villanueva will have more on that in the next couple of blocks.

and it was ten years ago that hurricane katrina slammed into new orleans. and a wreath was placed at the memorial for victims. the memorial was placed to house unclaimed victims of katrina which killed more than 1800 people. >> as we gather here today to remember and honor those who lost their lives as a result of hurricane katrina, our hearts are grieving. our hearts are heavy. >> well, most of the deaths as you remember came in new orleans and the surrounding area when levees protecting that city failed leaving 80% of the city under water. still ahead here on news 4. three public housing buildings are imploded to make way for a newer complex. what is in store for the future. that story when we come back. leave early go roam sleep in sleep out star gaze dream big wander more care less beat sunrise

wow, look at that. always fun to watch an implosion. today, three buildings came down in jersey city, all part of a plan for progress in one neighborhood. a heck of an alarm clock just after 9:00 a.m. on a saturday morning for people waking up in jersey city. three story buildings, part of the government housing complex, buildings that have stood here since 1952. came falling down, demolished,

imploded to make way for a project to create low income housing in the neighborhood. >> took time to build, comes down in seconds. >> reporter: joe shine lived here. >> i came up and asked if i could come up here to see it go down. >> reporter: jersey city's mayor pushed the lever and the explosions began. >> we think the residents who were a part of this neighborhood for decades will be happy with the new montgomery gardens. >> reporter: the implication could be heard miles away. the new portion of this complex will be mixed income, some paying full amounts, most will be subsidized. eric brown lived here for years. >> very emotional, because all the great stories we had at the time. i was able to put my kids through school and it was fun. just a lot of memories. >> reporter: the best of those memories being paid 50 cents to help a local band move some equipment, a band that later on went to do good things.

all right, steve is here with the check of a forecast. i understand i missed some excellent weather this past week and now it will start to get hot once again. >> it will get very warm as we head back to work monday and tuesday. in fact we could talk another heat wave with temperatures in the 90s starting on monday. but today, boy, it was just so nice outside. sunny, warm, low humidity, all of that will change in the next few days. not the sunny, but the warm and humidity part. it will get hot and humidity. the weather headlines look like this. the humidity making a comeback starting tomorrow.

the winds starting to come in from the south. the humidity goes up, that means that the heat goes up. and another heat wave is possible starting monday and lasting for most of the week. temperatures in the low 90s, feeling more like the mid-90s when you factor in the humidity and we're still tracking what is left over of tropical storm erika in the caribbean. but right now, 80 in the park, 80 at jfk. 79, at morristown and 85 in bridgewater. generally clear on the satellite image thanks to high pressure. but there is a disturbance off to the west and it could bring showers and thunderstorms as we head off tomorrow. that generally will be northwest of the city. i think most of us are dry tomorrow with temperatures in the upper 80s but with the humidity feeling more like the lower 90s. now, this is what was left over of what was tropical storm erika. now it is just a wave of low pressure.

it is falling apart, interacting with land, a lot of wind sheer, and producing winds at 35 miles an hour. but over the next few days it actually can make a run into the gulf of mexico and it may become a tropical storm again. this is early monday morning again, then pushing off towards tallahassee, and the west coast of florida could see very heavy rain in the next couple of days, anywhere from three to five inches. close to home, temperatures will be in the 60s, under partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, daytime highs in the upper 80s. maybe even a few low 90s southwest of the city. we'll have a couple of clouds around. and definitely more humid. and there is the seven-day forecast, check out those 90s. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. and notice no rain in the forecast. just lots of sunshine. >> and humidity. >> and uncomfortable weather. >> and uncomfortable weather. steve, thank you so much. we'll be right back with sports.
